MAKER / STEM
Kilkenny Libraries have a commitment to Maker and STEM. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and it represents an educational approach that integrates these disciplines to foster problem-solving, critical thinking, and innovation. The goal of STEM education is to prepare learners for careers in fields that drive technological advancement and scientific discovery.
Maker refers to the “maker movement,” which emphasizes hands-on learning through creating, building, and experimenting with projects—often using tools like 3D printers, robotics kits, and coding platforms. Together, STEM and Maker encourage creativity and practical application of knowledge, empowering individuals to design solutions, prototype ideas, and develop real-world skills in a collaborative and exploratory environment. Many libraries have begun to develop spaces for design and activities to teach and empower communities. The maker movement in libraries is about teaching people to think for themselves, to think creatively, and to look for do-it-yourself solutions.
Both STEM and Maker are supported by regular events and facilities at KIlkenny Library. Keep an eye on the Events Pages for forthcoming events at your local library.
