Summer Stars Callan Library

Summer Stars is the public library national summer reading programme for children that runs from the start of June until the end of August. All children throughout the country are invited to join the adventure and to enjoy the fun and pleasure of reading and writing over the summer. Summer Stars is non-competitive and every child who reads even one book/e-book is regarded as having completed the programme – and it’s all completely free!

 Summer Stars 2025

Summer Stars 2025 proved to be a resounding success for Kilkenny County Library Service, with 2,379 children signing up to the challenge and committing to read eight books over the summer holidays — surpassing our sign-up target by 4%. The initiative also contributed significantly to growing library membership, with over 290 children joining the library as part of the challenge. To complement the reading programme, branches hosted a vibrant array of summer events and activities. A total of 231 events were held across the county, attracting 3,354 participants throughout the summer months.
