Kilkenny County Council Library Service is delighted to announce the commencement of the 2021 Healthy Ireland at your Library programme, the aim of which, is to, continue to support our communities’ good health and well-being.

Due to Covid restrictions the programme will take a different format to previous ones where it will feature online talks and webinars rather than in branch events.

Dr. Mary O’Kane will deliver an online talk on “Raising Resilient Children”. Dr O’Kane is a lecturer in Psychology, Early Childhood Studies and Education. She is also a regular contributor on Ireland AM where she discusses a broad range of parenting and childhood issues. In her talk, Dr O’Kane will outline 3 practical steps we can take to support our children to become more resilient.

Owen Joyce a registered Occupation Therapist will deliver a talk on ““Tips for successful home working”. Owen explains "Working from home can be as difficult or as easy as you make it. Following the simple actionable tips outlined in this talk your home working life will be transformed”. Owen is a consultant Occupational Therapist with Original Therapies who specialise in improving their client’s quality of life through assessment, collaboration and practical advice.

“In addition to adapting our programme delivery we believe that these first talks of our 2021 programme are very relevant for the times we are currently in. We are delighted to have partnered with these facilitators and colleagues in Kilkenny County Council to bring about much needed advice and practical tips for our local communities at this time, comments Karyn Deegan, Healthy Ireland at your Library Co-ordinator for Kilkenny County Council Library Service.

Library staff have also been working on a collaborative event with our colleagues as part of  Kilkenny County Council’s Keep Well Campaign where local dietician Ellen Roche and local chef Jennifer Bay will be on hand to deliver practical advice and tips on nutrition for older adults at a cookery demonstration which will be filmed in the School of Food. You will be able to view this demo and hear Ellen’s advice on our social media platforms in March. Over 50 boxes of vegetables will be delivered through the Library Door to Door Delivery service across the County of Kilkenny so that older members in our community can follow the demo and cook their own hearty and healthy soup.

Don’t forget that while you might not be able to visit our branches to browse through our dedicated HIaYL book collection you can check out our vast selection of eBooks and eAudio books all dedicated to health & well-being – to access these 24/7, simply download the Borrowbox app to your device and access using your library barcode and pin. We also have some excellent health related magazines for you to get some health eating ideas or exercise tips to keep you motivated! To access these magazines, download the RB digital app today.
