Trade Directories

Trade Directories are useful tools if you know that your ancestors were involved in a particular trade or profession. They are also useful in providing snapshots of shops and businesses in particular streets and localities

In addition, Directories can give useful descriptions of many of the large towns and villages throughout the county. They contain useful genealogical information covering a range of professions, including education, local government, religion, business & trading. The main directories available in the Local Studies’ Department in hard copy are:

  • Egan (1884)
  • Shearman (1839)
  • Lucas (1788)
  • Pigot (1820-22 & 1824)
  • Slater (1846, 1856, 1870, 1881 & 1894)

The following are available on CD ROM

  • Slater’s National Commercial Directory of Ireland, 1846
