Summer Stars

Summer Stars is an annual reading challenge under the Right to Read Literacy Initiative for Kilkenny. It runs throughout the Summer months to encourage children to read for fun over the summer holidays, and keep reading ability steady over the Summer months.

This year, Summer Stars Reading Adventure runs from Tuesday 15th June to until Friday August 27th in Kilkenny.

What you need to get started:

« A current library membership: Parents/guardians can sign up new members here or by visiting your local library (pre-booking advised)

« Summer Stars Reading Card: Click to download in English here, or as Gaeilge here, or collect one from your local library (pre-booking advised!)

How does it work?

  • The challenge is to read/listen to 8 books over the Summer.
  • You can borrow books from our libraries or download eBooks, eAudiobooks or eMagazines from our online collection from the comfort of home!
  • Record your progress on the reading card and watch out for regular story times, crafts, workshops and quizzes on our website and social media platforms.See What's on for details!

Returning your completed card

When you have finished reading the 8 books/magazines, fill in your name and library card number on the reading card.

Hand in your completed card to one of our library branches

email a clear scan / image to outreach@kilkennylibrary.ie

All completed cards returned by 5pm Friday 27th August will be entered into a draw for book vouchers and local business vouchers.

Summer Stars Activities:

Drawing workshops: Saturdays 10.30am on our facebook page and website (what's on) 10.30am

Storytimes: Saturdays 11.30am on our facebook page.

Crafts: Wednesdays 10.30am on our facebook page.

National Summer Stars Story Competition:

This year, as well as enjoying the all the amazing worlds you visit when reading books, Summer Stars is celebrating your imagination by running a short story competition. The competition is open to 6-18 year olds living in the Republic of Ireland. There are three age categories: age 6-9, age 10-14, age 15-18.  

To enter, write a story using the following opening line:

Of all the places in the world, I never thought I would be here.

There will be 15 finalists in each category and one national winner from each category.For full details and terms and conditions, click here
