Little Library Early Learning Literacy Centre Project

Kilkenny County Council Library Service launch ‘Little Library’ initiative for Early Learning Centres to encourage a love of reading among young children

88 Early Learning and Care settings, including registered childminders in County Kilkenny will receive free book bags under the First 5 Little Library Initiative.

The Initiative aims to develop little libraries in early learning and care service settings and build a consistent link with their local library to encourage a love of books and reading among young children.

As part of our National Right to Read Literacy programme which promotes literacy and reading development for people of all ages and backgrounds, Little Library packs containing books, library membership cards and literacy resources will be delivered to our local libraries, who will contact the registered Early Learning Centres and care settings to arrange collection.

The Little Library Bags each contain five books, one in Irish and four in English. The books are aimed at the Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) age range of 2.5 years to 5.5 years primarily, but can be used with all preschool children.  A number of other resources are also provided which we hope you will find useful, including:

Discover the Fun: Get ready for adventure with exciting children's services! Library Services Guide
Stories and Storytelling in Early Learning and Care developed by Barnardos
Building Little Libraries developed by Barnardos
Babbling Babies developed by Lifestart Services, Donegal Library Service and HSE Health Promotion and Improvement Service
Ready Steady Read developed by South Dublin Libraries
Library Social Story Card
Teacher’s library card

The project is a collaboration between the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth (DCEDIY), the Department of Rural and Community Development (DRCD) and the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA). €650,000 has been provided for the project from DCEDIY and DRCD.

The First 5 Little Library Bags initiative is funded by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Inclusion and Youth and the Department of Rural and Community Development to build on the relationships between the Early Learning and Care centres and libraries as part of the First 5 Government Strategy for babies and children and the public libraries Right to Read Programme.  Library will also have First 5 Little Library bags available to loan to parents and for story times and reading corners in the library.
